Ares del Maestrat is a picturesque village. Its beauty and its easy-going way of welcoming will convince you to get back once you have visited for the first time. The Maestrat is a cultural area spread in two Spanish regions: Valencian Community and Aragon. Read here our article about the Aragonese side.

Panorama of Ares del Maestrat village and its castle upon Muela de Ares

Ares is located in the Valencian Community region in Spain in Maestrat Mountains at 1,195 meters high. The village is kind of small and built on a cliff.

Out of season, there is only one restaurant and the only option for accommodation at the same place. But the village is iconic from many angles and Muela de Ares, the awesome shaped hill of Ares, is visible from almost everywhere.

Up there, are the remains of the old Templar castle which presents Arab walls and Iberian vestiges.

There down, at the same hill, there are the prehistoric paintings of Cova Remigia, which were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. All around the hill there viewing points to the mountains during daylight or to admire the stars at night.

The streets of the village are cute and narrow built along the rocks. There, you will easily find the old Lonja, a Gothic civil building that is currently the headquarters of the Town Council.

Close to it, there is a nice square where Hotel D’Ares is located with its very cosy terrace for drinks and meals.
