Visiting Hallstatt is always a good idea! Yes, it is, as depending on which part of the year we are travelling to the village, it shows us a different side. More vibrant colours during summer, with an emerald green shade on the lake, while in winter all the roofs are covered by snow. This time we decided to visit Hallstatt on an autumn day, with falling leaves on the streets, already enough chilly to enjoy an over-priced hot chocolate while wondering around.
How to get to Hallstatt
Hallstatt is relatively easy to access from whichever direction we are getting there. The roads are incredible beautiful, snowy mountains, high pine trees, green fields, curvy roads in good condition. Still let’s be careful and don’t get distracted by the beauty of the territory on the road. Sometimes it can be surprisingly curvy and on an icy road it gets really dangerous. Even though, visiting Hallstatt is an anytime great idea!
- Via train: it’s super quick (less than 2 hours) and relatively cheap, for 10 EUR you can get your train ticket to Hallstatt. Book it here!
- Via car: Depending on the road we choose we can take the distance within 1,5 hours on road.

- Via car: The fastest way is via S6, on which you can make it within 3,5 hours. Remember that all around Austria you will need to pay for the highways. There are no tolls, but you are obliged to buy a sticker at the nearest petrol station on the border and place it on your windshield. You can choose between 10 days – monthly – yearly options. There is video control all around the roads, so if you miss the sticker, for sure you will get a fine soon.

All around Hallstatt the traffic takes a mandatory detour to the outskirts of the town. You can enter to the most interesting parts, nor to the pedestrian streets with your car. Only locals with special permits can do so. But luckily all around Hallstatt you will find a lot of parkings. It is marked how many free places you can have access to all around, so just choose the most convenient one based on your walking plan. You need to pay for your parking no matter what, there are no free options, nor free places.
What to see around once visiting Hallstatt
The village of Hallstatt is such an unbelievably spectacular place that even the Chinese have created a copy of the ancient salt mine village. But only in the original you will be able to discover this truly unique culture with such a history all in a breath-taking mountain setting. The picture-perfect colourful houses with perfectly matching flowers on the balconies, the cute pedestrian streets, the market around and the breathtaking view on the lake around. Priceless!
In autumn, there’s a lot to discover here! The mountains and valleys offer so much to explore: magical caves for mountaineers, centuries-old mining tunnels with a fantastical trip through time. You can take a side trip to idyllic Bad Ischl or an unforgettable day excursion to the Grünberg on Lake Traun. Along the crystal clear lakes of the holiday region of Dachstein Salzkammergut, there’s always something new to discover. Don’t miss out on these amazing attractions!
The municipality had already population in the 1st millenium before Christ: during this period – the iron age – the civilisation here already flourished.
Where to stay in Hallstatt
Around Hallstatt the number of accommodations are few, and over-priced. You need to be lucky and quick to get a friendly option. But it’s always worth to take a look around in the nearby villages, or even in Salzburg for better prices.
We stayed in Blackhome Hotel Salzburg, with a contactless option. The place was nice, easy to access, and the standards were as per the pictures. The only problem there was the fire-alarm at 3 am in the morning that made our stay definitely unforgettable.

Based on the expensive lodging, I’m concluding that Hallstatt would be better visited for us as a day trip from Salzburg. What other villages would suffice for this purpose here?
This is one of my dream places…but I think I won’t get the chance to visit. Thanks for sharing the video…that’s the closest I can go I suppose.
I hope you will have the chance to see it in real life too once, it is simply so beautiful 😍
Indeed one of the most romantic places in Central Europe!
