There are some posh places included in the list, as well as many street food options. So let’s see, where to eat on Madeira!

Where to eat on Madeira

Gavino, Funchal

Gavino Restaurante & Bar is located in the old town of Funchal. It offers very diversified dishes and products of its own production. The “Made By You Menu” gives you the opportunity to choose the ingredients and side dishes for your dish. It’s a perfect place for romantic dinners.

Casa do Bolo do Caco, Funchal

The perfect street food & the perfect fast food. It’s cheap, quick and super delicious. You can find Bolo do Caco almost everywhere, at every bar & restaurant. But you can find dedicated bars only for this delicious treat. The best among all for us was Casa do Bolo Do Caco. They have limited options for filling: cheese, chorizo, octopus & steak. They grill the bread in front of your eyes.

Penha d’Águia, Funchal

This cafeteria presents all the delights of Portuguese pastries. As well as specialities & cakes typical from Madeira. It is located in São Martinho district, and it’s easy to park around. Perfect for breakfast or for afternoon coffee as well.

CR7 Corner, Funchal

CR7 Corner is a multifunctional industrial designed loft styled open gastronomic area with an open kitchen, Wood-Oven and Bar. At the Bar you can taste cocktails, wine, draft bears and long drinks. Their menu includes the traditional “Bolo de Caco” or other breads / buns with tasty toppings or you may try our fantastic healthy salad options, hamburgers, wood-fired pizza, beer and wine.

The Pub, Funchal

A classic English pub with great beer selection and a lovely terrace with live music. Besides that they have a nice menu of the day as well. Also the views are very nice on the capital as the terrace is located on the top of a hill. It’s the perfect spot to gain energy once you are tired of sightseeing.

Café Funchal Bar, Funchal

There might be better kitchens in Funchal but the lovely terrace, the perfect location and the nice service will definitely compensate you. With the daily soup options and Bolo do Caco on the side you cannot be mistaken. Especially if they are accompanied by a pair of Ponchas.

The Rooftop Bar of Three House Hotel, Funchal

Three House Hotel features a restaurant, a rooftop bar with outdoor swimming pool, and a fitness centre. Each accommodation at the 4-star hotel has city views, and guests can enjoy access to a garden and to a terrace. The accommodation provides a 24-hour front desk, airport transfers, room service and free WiFi throughout the property. But you don’t need to be guest of the hotel in order to have a drink at the rooftop bar. Easily from the parking garage you can get up by the elevator and enjoy the views.

A Espiga Restaurant, Santana

This restaurant we can find on the main square of Santana. Just right next to the colourful traditional houses. For the first sight it doesn’t look very promising, but once inside, you will realise you are at the right place. Great food, friendly atmosphere.

Tasquinha do Pescador, Caniçal

We visited this restaurant on the first day that we spent on Madeira. Caniçal is a real and living fishermen’s village, with amazingly fresh seafood. We order only two plates, and both of them felt like coming right out of the ocean, so fresh, so good.

Restaurante Bom Jesus, Santa Cruz

This restaurant is located just right in front of the Parish Church of Santa Cruz – Church of São Salvador. Only for their lovely terrace it’s worth taking a break. But they also have proper Portuguese kitchen with local specialities.

Taberna dos Lobos, CĂĄmara de Lobos

This place has a perfect location with beautiful views on the bay of CĂĄmara de Lobos. The food is excellent & the waiters are friendly. Taberna dos Lobos offers tasty sardine, tuna steaks and octopus. You can choose between indoor and outdoor seating. But on a sunny day, the best is to stay outside on their cute terrace. The nice staff works hard, stays positive and makes this place wonderful. The enjoyable service is a great benefit of this spot. You will pay average prices for your meal, but the option of paying by card is not always available.

Bar Filhos do Mar, CĂĄmara de Lobos

This is the bar where we first tried the famous Nikita drink. The owner was very friendly, explaining the recipe, offering gratis Ponchas on the side even. If you are in Cámara de Lobos, and desire a break, don’t miss out on this place. Also worth going inside if you are a football fan, you can find many historical jerseys, relics, photos of football players who visited the place – including Cristiano Ronaldo.

XS Café, Prazeres

XS CafĂ© in Prazeres offers an outstanding view on the village’s Parish church. If you desire perfectly baked cakes and tasty sandwiches this place is for you. It’s worth coming to this cafe because of their great speciality coffee selection as well. Or to try the delicious craft beer that they serve here.
