Bunk’Art is a network of museums and art spaces located in Albania that aims to preserve and showcase the country’s Cold War history. The term “bunkart” is a portmanteau of “bunker” and “art.” In this article we review the Bunk’Arts in Tirana while exploring Albania’s Cold War history.

History of the Bunkers

During the Cold War, Albania’s communist government constructed a network of underground bunkers throughout the country, intended to protect the population in case of nuclear attack. These bunkers were a ubiquitous feature of Albania’s landscape, with over 173,000 built throughout the country.
