Prevention: the first thing for a Kuwait Border Crossing

Amidst the regional tensions and terrorist threats caution in security measures is a good idea. Be always careful. We didn’t see any wrong thing in Kuwait ever but keep always your eyes open and follow the local authorities advice. A general terrorism threat looms, potentially impacting Western interests and nationals through terrorist attacks.

Some restrictions to know

Land travel to Iraq and Saudi Arabia must occur through designated border crossings with prior authorizations and visas. Nighttime navigation is restricted in Kuwait’s territorial waters, except for authorized cases. In case of drugs laws impose severe penalties, including death or life imprisonment.

Requirments to get in for a Kuwait Border Crossing

You may need a passport valid for at least 6 months for entry into Kuwait, with instances of entry denial to passport holders with entry or exit stamps from Israel. Passport holders with less than six months’ validity won’t be successful on getting in. Immigration authorities strictly enforce this criterion, disallowing the use of provisional passports for entry.

Notably, Kuwaiti authorities do not recognize provisional passports (green booklet) for entry. If using a different travel document upon exit, a departure permit from the Kuwaiti police is necessary, obtained by presenting the new document issued by your embassy, such as a passport or safe conduct.

Travelers in transit in Kuwait

While many passport holders due to their nationality are exempt from airport transit visa requirements according to Kuwaiti regulations, if transit involves changing terminals within the airport, travelers must briefly enter Kuwaiti territory due to the airport’s configuration. Therefore, in such cases, holding a short-stay visa is recommended.

Visa to Kuwait

Visa issuance, both at border points and online, has resumed, and visa requirements depend on Kuwaiti authorities. The traveler can get both visa issuance at the border and online visa issuance through the link of Kuwait Ministery of Interior website.

Visas are required for holders of ordinary passports and for holders of diplomatic or service passports if it is for accreditation as Embassy staff. We entered Kuwait by the airport and the procedure seemed to us in 2024 very organized and easy to follow. You only need to follow the signs that lead you to the counter where some officers would prepare the papers for you and you will be able to  pay at the same place  by card. The cost of a visa at the airport or obtained electronically from the Ministry of Interior’s website is 3 KD, equivalent to about 9.5 euros. Tourist and visitor visas do not permit work.

In case of entry into Kuwait by land from Iraq or Saudi Arabia, it is advisable to arrange a visa before travelling. For stays of up to 90 days you can apply for a visa online.

Kuwait border crossing for expats

To reside in Kuwait for work or family reunification, obtaining a residence visa from the Kuwait Embassy in your own country is mandatory. To accredit Embassy personnel a visa issued by the Kuwait Embassy in the corresponding country is helpful. It is recommended to verify the obtained visa’s validity. Exiting the country after the visa expiration incurs daily fines, specified on the visa’s reverse side.

Since September 2023, a Kuwaiti government decision restricts expatriates with pending traffic violations from leaving the country. For minor infractions, fines can be paid instantly through the Kuwait Ministry of Interior’s website. However, for serious offenses, individuals must personally visit the kuwaiti Traffic Department and solve the problem in person. This measure also applies to unpaid bills for utilities such as water, electricity, or phone services. Unpaid water and electricity bills can be settled through the Sahel app or MEW-PAY app. Phone bills can be paid through the official website of the provider.
