Explosive Growth in Pilgrimage Numbers

Saudi Arabia welcomes 15.2 million Umrah pilgrims between January and March 2025, confirming a historic rise in religious tourism. The total includes 6.5 million international arrivals, showing a 10.7% increase compared with the first quarter of 2024. The figures highlight a steady demand for faith-based travel, with Saudis representing around 24% of the total, while men make up 60.5% and women 39.5%. This surge reflects the government’s ongoing investment in expanding access and improving facilities to meet the expectations of millions of worshippers.

Domestic and International Participation

Within the total, 8.7 million domestic pilgrims take part, of whom 58% are non-Saudi residents living in the Kingdom. This balance underlines the diversity of the Umrah community, shaped by both citizens and expatriates. International arrivals dominate the overall increase, with pilgrims traveling from across the globe to fulfill their religious duty. The mix illustrates how Umrah functions as a global spiritual journey, uniting Muslims from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds in the holy cities.

Aviation as a Central Enabler

Air travel proves indispensable in managing this massive movement of people. Over 82% of international pilgrims arrive by air, making aviation the backbone of the pilgrimage sector. Saudi airports in Jeddah, Riyadh, and Madinah expand services to handle demand, while airlines offer flexible routes and packages designed for pilgrims. This reliance on air transport demonstrates the Kingdom’s broader strategy of linking religious tourism with aviation growth, ensuring smooth connections and easier access for millions of travelers.

Seasonal Trends and New Initiatives

Pilgrimage flows vary by month: January records the highest international arrivals, while March sees the peak in domestic participation. Madinah alone hosts 6.45 million visits, of which 4.4 million come from abroad, reaffirming its central spiritual role. To improve the overall experience, authorities introduce smart bracelets for health monitoring, the Rushd app for digital guidance, and a 24/7 toll-free multilingual service at the Prophet’s Mosque. These initiatives combine tradition with innovation, making the journey safer, more accessible, and spiritually fulfilling for a rapidly growing number of pilgrims.
