Taxis are a convenient and widely available means of transportation in Riyadh. You can find them at major hotels, shopping malls, and transportation hubs. It’s recommended to use reputable taxi services, and you can also consider using ride-hailing apps like Uber or local equivalents. In this article we will learn to use taxis in Riyadh in a best way to make of it the most convinient way of moving around in the capital of Saudi Arabia.

Public transport in Riyadh

Public Buses in Riyadh

Riyadh has a public bus system that serves various routes within the city. The buses are an affordable option, but they might be less convenient for tourists compared to other modes of transportation. The stops are actually small closed stations with air con where you can hide from the heat and sit. Bus frequencies could be improved so taxis are still a better option.

Metro

Riyadh Metro will be soon a modern and efficient metro system that connects various parts of the city. The metro will have two lines, making it a convenient option for getting around. It’s especially useful for reaching key attractions and business districts. It will be on service this current 2024.

Tourist Shuttles

Some hotels and tour operators may offer shuttle services for tourists, providing transportation to popular tourist attractions. Check with your accommodation or local tour agencies for information on available shuttle services.

Private Transport in Riyadh

Walking

Depending on your location and the weather, walking can be a pleasant way to explore certain areas, especially around popular districts, markets, and landmarks. In favor, that is a free transportation. Against, you will arrive nowhere. The distances in Riyadh are so huge and extenuating that nobody would expect you go walking

Private Transportation Services

Some tourists opt for private transportation services or guided tours, where a local driver or guide takes you to specific attractions. This option provides convenience and local insights.

Rental Cars

Renting a car is a popular option for tourists who prefer flexibility and independence. Several international and local car rental companies operate in Riyadh. Make sure to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and driving conditions before opting for this mode of transportation.

Types of Taxis in Riad

Official taxis

They are green and they are meant to use a taximeter. The drivers we met in official taxis while we were in Riyadh were all fair and respectful. According to a new regulation of the Saudi Government, taxis in Riyadh should always use a taximeter and provide payment by card. The fares are reasonable, you can cross the city for 80 or 90 SAR which can seem a lot of money but you will notice distances are very long in Riyadh. There are no taxi stations so you can just walk and wait to see one  of them  in circulation.

Taxis in Riyadh

Non-official taxis

They are a proper lottery. Some of the drivers are really nice and helpful honest people who  wanted to have some extra income on top of their official work salaries. Some others, especially at the airport, are a bunch of charlatans who will want to get as much money from you as possible, regardless of whether the price to charge is fair or not. They don’t provide payment by card and they don’t pay the taxes that proper taxis pay. They neither offer any kind of safety.

Unofficial taxis should be your last option. The Saudi government has made efforts to provide fair tourist services in an official way. As tourists we ought to support that kind of commitment.

Uber in Riyadh

This is an excellent option since you can prepay and know in advance the fare of the ride before getting in a taxi. Unfortunately,  you need internet connection to book a ride on Uber so make sure you can have WIFI or get a Saudi SIM Card

Tips to avoid scams in Taxis in Riyadh

Verify Taxi Credentials

Ensure the taxi has proper identification and markings. Official taxis display license information. Avoid unmarked vehicles to reduce the risk of scams.

Use Reliable Apps

Rely on reputable ride-hailing apps for secure and transparent transactions. Confirm driver details, track your route, and pay digitally to minimize the potential for scams. In Riyadh you can use or Careem. Unfortunately Careem still has some issues with foreign phone numbers and credit cards.

Know the price in advance

Many taxi drivers will ask you to jump inside before negociating the price. First the bargain and only after you get in. There are thre solutions to avoid being cheated: negociate upfront the price, make sure the taxi driver uses taximeter or book a ride on a trustworthy app.

Have change

To avoid missunderstandings and the classic trick of I don’t have change just have the exact amount you areable to pay for the ride.

Keep calm and smile

Don’t fight if you find yourself in a scam. You have negotiated upfront the price  and you never should change it on the go. No matter what. They can tell a bridge is broken, an earthquake is happening at the moment or the SAR is broken in the Dow Jones. Stay with the price you negotiated and never pay more.
